CONYERS & LAWRENCE: 30 DAYS WITH NO CONCLUSION INTO THE DEATH OF UNARMED 15-YEAR-OLD DAMON GRIMES
Detroit, MI – House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (MI-13) and Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) today released a joint statement following the death of 15-year-old Damon Grimes, who died after being tased and crashing an ATV he was driving:
“We are deeply concerned by the death of 15-year-old Damon Grimes. It appears that the Michigan State Police trooper who fired a Taser through his vehicle window at Damon went against protocol and state law by tasing the unarmed young boy, ultimately resulting in his death.
“It is past time for Michigan State Police to gather all of the facts surrounding this incident. This investigation must move expeditiously and be turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for further handling. A tragedy such as this one must never occur again. We will be closely monitoring this situation.”
