CONGRESSMAN CONYERS ACKNOWLEDGES THE IMPORTANCE OF JEWISH AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
Detroit, MI – Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) released the following statement on Jewish American Heritage Month, which is observed throughout the month of May:
“The celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month recognizes the many achievements and contributions of generations of Jewish Americans. The commitment of the Jewish community to sustained learning, scientific inquiry, and the pursuit of justice represents much of what is great in the United States of America.
“Over the decades I have been fortunate to serve with many Jewish Americans in the House of Representatives whose stalwart advocacy for tikkun olam, or repairing the world, has strengthened my resolve in the effort to ensure jobs, justice, and peace for all Americans.
“During the struggle for civil rights in the 1960s many Jewish Americans fought to ensure equality for all. The murders of James Cheney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner; the interfaith friendship of Dr. King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel; and the 21st Century struggle for equality in the United States of America demonstrate the profound and important impact that Jewish-Americans have had in the fight for justice. I am proud to continue that tradition with the Jewish American community and I look forward to continuing this important work.”
