 Conyers Welcomes the Administration’s Much Needed Assistance to Michigan Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On September 30th the U.S. Department of Labor announced three National Emergency Grants totaling $38,033,600 to assist workers affected by documented layoffs from multiple companies in Michigan with $19,016,800 being released initially. These funds will provide much needed assistance to workers who are currently displaced and those affected by future layoffs occurring within these southeastern Michigan during the grants’ 12-month period of performance. Congressman John Conyers, Jr. made the following statement regarding the grants:

“These grants are another example of the Administration’s commitment to helping displaced and laid-off workers in Michigan. For many years, the citizens of Michigan have worked hard and have been the ideal image of middle class. Now, that image and way of life are in jeopardy. I know that Secretary Solis President Obama believe in the people of Michigan and their workforce; they marking the necessary investments to assist us in these tough times.”

The amount released will be funded by resources made available for National Emergency Grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines.  For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG.
