WASHINGTON – U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow and Congressmen John Dingell and John Conyers, Jr., announced today that Wayne County Airport Authority will receive a $9 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to renovate runway 05R/23L at Willow Run Airport.
“Willow Run Airport’s 24-hour schedule helps fuel the economic engine in Southeast Michigan,” said Sen. Levin. “This funding for runway improvements will help ensure that Willow Run continues its top notch service for business and cargo planes.”
“This is welcome news for Southeast Michigan companies that depend on business and cargo plane service at Willow Run,” said Stabenow. “Bringing the runway up to current standards will ensure that the airport runs efficiently and continues to support economic growth.”
“This important funding is a much welcomed investment in an airport that continues to fuel our local economy, helping to both protect and create good jobs. The constant activity at Willow Run serves as a reminder that Michigan’s 12th Congressional District remains open for business, and I’m proud to have joined Senator Levin, Senator Stabenow and Congressman Conyers in support of this funding.”
“I am pleased that Willow Run Airport received this critical funding for runway renovations,” said Conyers. “In this time of fiscal belt tightening, I commend the Department of Transportation for their continued support of needed updates to our Southeast Michigan’s transportation infrastructure.”
Willow Run Airport is a leading air cargo and general aviation facility that handles 200 million pounds of cargo each year, leading to the contribution of $85 million to the regional economy and supporting 1,500 jobs across Michigan.
